English football's bitterest arch-rivals meet in Miami on
Monday and both know there will be more than some pre-season bauble at
stake
The season's first Man United v Liverpool match will be played in Florida
Arch-rivals Liverpool and Manchester United don't agree on much, but
both camps insist their Monday meeting in the final of the International
Champions Cup is not 'just a friendly'.
United midfielder Darren Fletcher admits his teammates are desperate for revenge on their old foes, who did the Premier League double over them last season - including a 3-0 humiliation at Old Trafford - and prove they are on the way back with new boss Louis van Gaal after finishing seventh.
“It’s Manchester United v Liverpool,” said the midfielder. “I know it’s only pre-season and it’s just a summer competition, but when United play Liverpool, it’s always a big deal.
“We want to win every match, and it’s no different when we play Liverpool.”
The Old Trafford giants face their arch-rivals at Miami's Sun Life Stadium in the first fight for silverware of an exciting Premier League season - the climax of a competition that has been played out to impressively full stadiums across the US and Canada.
And the Kopites' manager Brendan Rodgers reckons it’s the dream final... because it is the biggest club-level fixture in the world.
